Client psychology for personal trainers
Client psychology for personal trainers comes down to a short list of things about the person in front of you that change how you should coach them. You don't need a degree or certification to get at any of it.
What it actually covers
Strip away the academic version and it is five questions. How does this person take correction? What actually motivates them, as opposed to what sounds motivating when they are signing up? What happens to them when work or home life gets heavy? What do they need from you in order to trust you? And what are the signs when they are on their way out, a few weeks before they cancel?
Answer those five and you can coach almost anyone. Miss them and you are running a good program for a person you do not understand yet.
Why the intake form does not get you there
Intake forms are built for the body. Goals, injuries, availability, training history. All of it matters, and none of it tells you whether this person needs you to push in week three or needs you to back off. Most trainers work it out eventually, somewhere around month four, after a couple of sessions that went sideways for reasons neither the trainer or client can articulate. The information was there the whole time but no way to collect or make sense of it.
You do not need a certification for this
Most of what gets written about client psychology for personal trainers is written to sell you a course. The courses are fine. But becoming a practitioner is a different job than the one you are trying to do, which is to know the specific people on your schedule well enough to coach them properly on Tuesday.
How to get it in ten minutes
That is what The Read is built for. You send your client a link. They spend 10 minutes answering questions, with no account to create or app to download. Two reports come back by email, one written for them and one written for you with the coaching guidance in it. Underneath it is the Big Five personality model, attachment style, and motivation type, scored and then translated into what to actually do.
The client personality assessment for personal trainers page covers the coach side in more detail, and the personality test for personal training clients page covers what your client experiences.
What it costs
Every new account starts with two free reads, so you can run it on real clients before you pay anything. After that, plans start at $19.99 a month for 10 reads.
