The best client personality assessments for personal trainers
The best client personality assessments for personal trainers are the ones you can use on an actual client, without buying a certification first. Most personality tools are built for offices. Five are compared here against what a trainer actually needs.
How these are judged
Every tool on this list gets the same four questions.
- Can you run it on a client, or only on yourself?
- Can you use it without completing a certification first?
- Does the report tell you how to coach the specific individual, or only name their type?
- What does one client cost?
They are ordered by how specific each one is to coaching fitness clients. The Read is ours. It is first because it is the only tool built for that job, which is the standard this page is using, and you can check the other four yourself. Every price comes from the company's own page.
1. The Read
Built for personal trainers/coaches and the people they train. You send one link. Your client spends about 10 minutes answering questions, with no account to create and no app to download, and two reports come back by email: one written for them, one written for you with the coaching guidance in it. Big Five, along with attachment style and motivation type. No certification. Every new account starts with two free reads, then plans start at $19.99 a month for 10 reads.
The coach side is covered in more depth on the client personality assessment for personal trainers page, and the client's experience on the personality test for personal training clients page.
2. TraitLab Pro
Big Five based, sold as credits rather than a subscription. One assessment is $49, and the price steps down with volume to $27 each once you are buying 100 or more. Credits do not expire, and there is no certification to complete. You can send assessments to clients by email, invite code, or QR code, so the mechanics work for a coach.
The writing is aimed at teams and personal development rather than coaching, so the report describes the person well without telling you what to change about how you train them. Of the general-purpose tools here, it is the closest to what a trainer needs.
3. Truity@Work
No training or certification required, priced per test with no contract. Truity states pricing goes as low as $9 a test on orders of 100 or more. They do not publish the small-order price on that page, so budget for finding out.
You choose from DISC, a 16-type test in the Myers-Briggs tradition, the Enneagram, Big Five, and an emotional intelligence test. The framing throughout is workplace: hiring, teams, and management. Worth your time if you already know which framework you want and you do not mind translating office language into gym language yourself.
4. Crystal
DISC and Big Five, sold by subscription rather than by the client. The personal profile is free, Premium is $49 a month, the sales plan is $59 a month or $590 a year, and the assessment plans run $99, $249, and $499 a month.
It is built for sales teams reading a prospect before a meeting, and it is good at that. The subscription model also means you pay the same whether you assess two clients this month or twenty. Consider it if the conversation you most want help with is the one where you sell the package.
5. Potentia
Aimed at consultants, corporate trainers, and HR teams. Certification is mandatory. Their site states you must complete their certification before you can use any of their assessments, and no pricing is published anywhere on the site, so the cost of finding out is a phone call.
If you want a credential alongside the tool, that is a legitimate purchase and this is a legitimate company. It is not a fast way to understand the client you are seeing on Thursday.
What it comes down to
Four of these five are built for offices, and they do that job well. The translation into coaching is left to you. The question worth asking of any assessment you are considering is whether the report changes what you do in the next session, or whether it hands you a label to repeat back to the client. That distinction is the whole of client psychology for personal trainers in practice.
Prices and certification requirements were checked in August 2026. Companies change both, so confirm before you buy.
